The anonymous tune of "L'homme armé" was widely used across Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries as a structural and melodic source for composers of masses. The reason for its enduring success remains uncertain, but its catchy melody and evocative martial theme clearly appealed to composers such as Dufay and Carissimi.De Profundis continues its Morales project with two very different but equally beautiful masses on this tune, along with its spectacular Magnificat secundi toni.DeProfundis is a hand-picked vocal ensemble that performs continental Renaissance sacred music at its original low pitch, with an all-male adult choir, true to the period. Alternately directed by Robert Hollingworth and Eamonn Dougan, the ensemble will release 10 albums on CORO over the next ten years, completing its exploration of Morales's work.
