Buhloone Mindstate

The group's third studio album, Buhloone Mindstate, released on September 21, 1993, saw the evolution of the group towards a new sound as they continued to stylistically and musically develop. There were several moments on the album that proved the group had matured. "I Be Blowin'" was a shift as the track was instrumental featuring a saxophone by Maceo Parker. The introspective "I Am I Be" showcased De La Soul at their peak of self-reference to date. "Long Island Wildin'" was a collaboration with Japanese hip-hop artists Kan Takagi (Major Force) and the trio Scha Dara Parr (SDP). The album's first single, "Breakadawn," used a sample from "I Can't Help It" by Michael Jackson and "Quiet Storm" by Smokey Robinson. De La Soul collaborated for the first time with Guru from Gang Starr on "Patti Dooke," and with female MC Shortie No Mas, who was featured on several tracks of the album and particularly highlighted on "In The Woods." The album concluded with an old school collaboration with Biz Markie titled "Stone Age." The album received critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone ranking it among the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.
