David Orlowsky (Clarinet) and David Bergmüller (Lute) are companions on the road, yet they could hardly be more different. They come from different musical traditions and the combination of these two instruments has no historical reference. With 'Alter Ego', David Orlowsky and David Bergmüller venture into unexplored musical territories. The clarinet tells of the past (Purcell, Kapsberger, Dowland) while the lute intertwines to form polyrhythmic structures as past and present come together in original compositions. When David Orlowsky first discovered a video of David Bergmüller on the Internet, he did not know he had met his musical alter ego. The two men met in Berlin and mutually agreed to make music together after sharing a few notes. They became companions, which then transformed into a duo, the latter eventually becoming an organism. Within this organism, David and David function as opposing and complementary personalities. In songs like "Flow my Tears" by John Dowland or "Dido's Lament" by Henry Purcell, the clarinet then takes over. Stylistically independent, musical echoes, for example Klezmer, flow into the lute melodies. David Orlowsky has already made a name for himself worldwide with his award-winning trio for the fusion of classical music and klezmer. After the separation of the David Orlowsky Trio in 2019 after two good decades, the duo with David Bergmüller now signifies a new musical beginning for the clarinetist in (until now) unexplored territory.
