When one discovers the music of David Lacroix (born in 1955), a vast musical garden is revealed, with original arrangements, flowers and trees with unfamiliar scents and foliage, a garden exposed to several winds at once, blowing from geographies with unheard-of folklores and writings. There one discovers a sense of rhythm entirely his own, rethought from one work to the next, that is, a sense of the musical phenomenon animated by ideas left almost subterranean, yet which run through his compositions and play with the music lover and their perception of forms, timbre, and their own memory. A guitarist and composer, he moves alongside traditions where invention proves very close to improvisation, for example in classical Arabic and Persian music, or in medieval music, but also in the most modern jazz... and he is inexhaustible when it comes to explaining the ideas and forms that led to these centuries-old practices, their relationship to the literature or poetry of the time, the languages, legends, arts, and philosophers. But he is just as inexhaustible when it comes to contemporary artistic creation. This release owes much to the musical energy, hungry for new forms of writing, embraced by the formidable Parisian guitarist Caroline Delume, a performer who is both fearless and thoughtful, at the center of this record: I particularly enjoy discovering and studying music that speaks to me and captivates me by arousing in me a questioning of its musical conceptions, of the techniques it requires one to learn or transform, which thus make one want to bring it to life by performing it, as opposed to music that might perhaps fall “better” under the fingers but would not provoke any particular curiosity in me. David Lacroix is an artist whose passionate knowledge of written and traditional music, of its instrumental and vocal techniques, and of the arts in general, is dazzling.
