Description

They are universally recognized as the most exciting young string quartet at the moment, bringing a breath of fresh air to the interpretation of traditional classical repertoire but also an original way of approaching works in the contemporary domain. In parallel, they have also made a splash by venturing into surprising interpretations of pieces belonging to the realm of Nordic folk music. Their 2014 album 'Wood Works' (Dacapo Records) was a great success, and audiences around the world have been delighted by the concerts they have given of this repertoire. Today the Danish String Quartet continues this project around folk music by recording for ECM a new exhilarating disc. 'Fästan' is derived from an unusual Christmas hymn, 'Now the most beautiful of roses has been found', published in 1732 by the Danish theologian and poet H.A. Brorson. This hymn is carried by a melody that is both mysterious and dark: Brorson indeed chose an old Lutheran chorale to accompany his text, elegantly showing how life and death are constantly connected.
