My American Story: North

Description

With his new project, Daniil Trifonov embarks on a highly personal musical journey across the American continents. The first in a two-album series, "My American Story - North," begins in the United States. Trifonov has spent more than half of his life there. The eclectic repertoire of the album "gave me access to many perspectives, styles, cultures, places, people, stories, and forms of expression that have shaped and marked my experience of America," explains Trifonov. The chosen works range from jazz and swing to minimalist and film music. Two piano concertos form the framework of the album: Gershwin's famous Concerto in F, as well as a concerto composed especially for Trifonov by Mason Bates, in its world premiere. Both are accompanied by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The solo piano pieces include works by John Adams, Aaron Copland, John Corigliano, and Dave Grusin, as well as Trifonov's own transcriptions of jazz classics like Art Tatum's "I Cover the Waterfront," Bill Evans' version of "When I Fall in Love," pieces from the Hollywood classics *The Firm* and *American Beauty*, and John Cage's legendary "4'33"."
