Danielle Yvonne Marie Antoinette Darrieux was born on May 1, 1917, in Bordeaux. When her father died, she was seven years old, and her mother, to support the family, gave singing lessons. Gifted with a clear and accurate voice, she discovered a passion for singing and music and took piano and cello lessons. However, she began her career in cinema: at 14, she acted and sang in Le Bal, then with Pierre Mingand, she acted and sang in numerous musical films such as La Crise est finie, Mauvaise graine, Mademoiselle Mozart, etc. As an actress, she tackled all genres: comedies, musicals, melodramas, and historical films. She worked with the greatest directors in over 90 films: Henri Decoin, Max Ophüls, Billy Wilder, Claude Autant-Lara... She divided her career between theater, cinema, and singing, but her stage appearances were rather rare: she was seen in Brussels and in a few venues and cabarets in France. She remained an essential star of cinema and theater and received numerous awards: Best Actress Victory in 1955 & 1958, Crystal Star in 1955 (Le Rouge et le Noir), Honorary César in 1985, Honorary Molière in 1997, Molière again in 2003 (Oscar et la dame rose), Crystal Globe in 2010.
