Deutsche Grammophon releases the fifth complete recording of the sonata cycle by Daniel Barenboim, a statement of legacy from a great Beethovenian. Few musicians have dedicated themselves to Beethoven's music with as much intensity and for as long a period as pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. For this recording, his fifth complete cycle of the thirty-two sonatas, Barenboim revisited the scores of these sonatas, drawing on all his past experiences. With his typical curiosity and stubbornness, he - in his own words - tried to interpret everything "with a virginal freshness and to start from scratch." Barenboim has always regarded Beethoven as one of the most important, if not the most important, of all composers in his life. Barenboim's constant concern for Beethoven is also reflected in his new recording of the composer's last major work for piano, the Diabelli Variations op. 120.
