"SO Romantic!" illustrates the melodramatic side of French opera from the years 1830-1900, which gradually came to be seen as too light and partly condemned to oblivion. "I am convinced that it is because we had lost the codes of interpretation," says tenor Cyrille Dubois. "It is with the idea of restoring its nobility to this precious French heritage that I have constructed this program, which highlights rarities while showcasing the use and employment of the registers so characteristic of the 'French lyric tenor.'" The keen sleuths at Palazzetto Bru Zane have gathered these treasures from Bizet, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Auber, Halévy, Donizetti, Thomas, Delibes, as well as lesser-known composers like Godard, Dubois, Silver, and the very obscure Luce-Varlet or Clapisson... With the Orchestre National de Lille, conducted by Pierre Dumoussaud, the French tenor displays all his artistry, impressive high notes, bright timbre, and grace "so" Cyrille!
