Les sept dernières paroles du Christ

Description

An instrumental "oratorio." It is for the devotions of Good Friday in Cadiz that Haydn wrote his "Seven Last Words," in 1786/1787. The task of composing a purely instrumental "oratorio" consisting of seven slow and contemplative movements is not the easiest; but the result is a sublime work, of great nobility, whose transcription by Haydn for string quartet has since enjoyed an unwavering popularity.
