At the end of the 2000s, the underground had left CRYPTOPSY for dead following an album that is better left unmentioned. But when the recent JUNO award winners returned from a critical exile in 2011, they reclaimed their crown as the most infamous name in death metal with their self-titled album. Even though he hadn't touched a guitar since leaving the band seven years ago, John Levasseur came back to allow CRYPTOPSY to regain its balance between jazzy experimentation and brutal technical mastery. The future classic "Two-Pound Torch" features a typically catchy riff. Although he is no longer a newcomer, Matt McGachy has established himself as the vocalist of CRYPTOPSY on the band's self-titled album. Each track reveals a sordid chapter of Canadian tradition. Strange cymbals and striking leads welcome chilling observations of UFOs on the fan-favorite track "Shag Harbour's Visitors."
