Description

The resounding success of Gounod's Faust at its premiere in 1859 overshadowed the rest of his operatic output. He wrote his opera twenty years after discovering Goethe's text, bringing exquisite melodies and rich orchestration to it. Moreover, the plot of Faust lends itself to spectacular stage effects, which Gounod exploits here, particularly during Marguerite's redemption. This version recorded at the Croatian National Theatre corresponds to the 1864 score, with the addition of an aria and the removal of spoken dialogues and ballets. It will once again confirm that this work represents the quintessence of French opera in the 19th century.
