Saint-Saëns : Intégrale des Symphonies

Description

Camille Saint-Saëns addresses all genres, but symphonic music holds a special place in his work. In this new release marking the centenary of the composer's death, in December 1921, Cristian Macelaru conducts his five Symphonies with the Orchestre National de France: those numbered 1 to 3, as well as two that are unnumbered - the Symphony of Youth in A major and the one in F major titled 'Urbs Roma', composed for the needs of a competition. These works span a period of thirty-five years: the Symphony in A major, which dates back to 1850, was written by Saint-Saëns when he was still a teenager, while the 3rd was created in 1886. The latter, by far the most famous of the five, is among the most grandiose and emblematic scores of Saint-Saëns. Its orchestration is enhanced by an organ part, played here by Olivier Latry.
