First an isolated pianist, Count Basie performed solo in a few clubs and in movie theaters, or accompanying vocalists, before flourishing as the leader of one of the most important big bands in history. A virtuoso of stride piano, he would then move away from this style, where the left hand plays a major role, to develop a fiery swing supported by a way of playing in which that same left hand would become increasingly discreet and almost subdued.
