Between the two wars, prostitution provided a golden subject for realistic songwriters (often men), hence this thematic anthology in two CDs. Different points of view have been expressed, that of the girls of course – “Les Filles ont une âme” (Germaine Lix), “Les Poupées de minuit” (Berthe Sylva) – but also that of their pimps - “Prosper”, the king of the pavement (Maurice Chevalier), “Monsieur Jo” (Andrex). The greatest performers of the first half of the century sang about the favorable streets – “Rue de Lappe” (Andrex), “La Rue de la Joie” (Damia) – and the specialized places – “En maison” (Damia), “L'Hôtel des amours faciles” (Andrée Turcy), “La Boîte à matelots” (Maria Ouessant)… The testimony of the client is curiously absent, but this journey to the land of "pierreuses" offers us an amazing range of songs that thrilled our grandmothers and grandfathers.
