Description

Based in New York, Combo Daguerre is the new project of Frenchman Olivier Conan, who after spending over a decade immersed in the world of psychedelic cumbia with his band Chicha Libre, has now developed an original repertoire of Francophone themes played in a psychedelic style. The band is made up of Latin musicians based in Brooklyn, and the multiple influences include bolero, cumbia, 60's rock, as well as obvious Gainsbourgian and surrealist influences. Chicha Libre has become a cult band in South America and Mexico, and Combo Daguerre is somewhat the Francophone heir to a project that could only have been born in New York, where cultural and linguistic boundaries are fluid and pan-Latin influences spill over into all musical worlds: from rock to hip hop - and now chanson. The themes, both joyful and serious, revolve around exile, displaced nostalgia, and a language tainted by distance. The artwork illustrating the cover is inspired by the horse heads of Parisian horse butcheries. A bicéphalic symbol that could represent a vanished empire? Combo Daguerre includes: Olivier Conan, Adele Fournet, Felipe Wurst (Banda Chuska/Tipa Tipo), Andres Fonseca, Neil Ochoa (Los Crema Paraiso, Chicha Libre), and Dan Martinez (La Mecanica Popular). Stephen Ulrich, from the cult New York band Big Lazy, plays lap steel on "Son Ombre" and baritone guitar on "Le Petit Bossu." Allyssa Lamb, from Las Rubias del Norte, sings on "Oh qu'il est doux."
