Bach Restored

Description

We know from an anecdote noted in the early 19th century that Bach wrote his two concertos for three harpsichords and strings (BWV 1063-64) with the intention of playing them with his two eldest sons, Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel. These pieces likely originated in the early 1730s when his children were still living under his roof. These two concertos are undoubtedly arrangements of lost originals with solo instruments. However, unlike the concertos for a single harpsichord (as well as two of the concertos for two harpsichords), no autograph source has been found. They only survive in copies, the earliest of which are from Bach's student Johann Friedrich Agricola, made around 1740 (Concerto in C major BWV 1064) and after 1750 (Concerto in D minor BWV 1063).
