The Magnificat was the very first of the works composed by Bach after his appointment as cantor at the Thomasschule in Leipzig in 1723: one can imagine the care he must have taken in the development of this work, marking his new territory. The Magnificat was revised a few years later: from E flat major, it moved to D major, and the distribution was considerably expanded: this is how one of Bach's most famous choral works has come down to us.
