This double album brings together two oratorios and three cantatas dedicated to the celebrations of Easter and Ascension. Often overshadowed by their Christmas counterpart, the two oratorios presented here rely on a form of drama absent from the cantatas; whether it involves directly various protagonists of the Passion of Christ (Easter) or the Evangelist reciting, Bach draws on earlier cantatas to deliver two compositions whose beauty and coherence Philippe Herreweghe has managed to highlight better than anyone else.
