In the mid-1970s, discotheques were booming in Tokyo and throughout Japan. When the famous group Fatback Band climbed the American and British charts in 1975 with their contagious hit "(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop", the Japanese label Victor released the following year the first Disco track made in Japan with "Sexy Bus Stop", under the mysterious name Dr. Dragon & Oriental Express, a pseudonym of the successful Japanese pop composer Kyohei Tsutsumi. "Sexy Bus Stop" became an instant hit in the country and, taking advantage of this opportunity, several Japanese record companies began releasing disco music. From 1976 until the early 1980s, the music was often recorded by skilled studio musicians rather than by computer, resulting in a truly organic sound on the dancefloor. Disco music also spread into TV series, commercials, and cartoons. From Godiego's monster hit "The Birth Of The Odyssey - Monkey Magic" to the obscure (and excellent!) track "Disco Great Tokyo" by Pink Parachute, this selection explores some of the best disco and boogie gems released on the legendary Nippon Columbia label in the late seventies and early eighties.
