I rewound the film of my amateur life into a book of conversations with Maud Berthomier, which we subtitled An Intimate History of Music. My existence, like that of many people my age, was shaken by the discovery of a whole new musical world. I felt it was time to dive into the heart of this revelation in order to share my own testimony. Here’s a playlist that could fit one of my shows. However, I would have a hard time justifying it by current events, a specific theme, or a particular reissue. In fact, it is purely selfish. Each of these songs is among the three hundred I chose to tell the story of my life in music. If it were up to me, there would be many more, and this book would come with a box set of twenty vinyl records. However, like on the radio, I had to be reasonable and realistic. What do a well-known song like "On the Road Again" by Canned Heat, which was heard everywhere in 1968, and a more obscure gem like "It’s a Wonderful Life" by Sparklehorse, heard in 2001 by a presumably smaller audience, have in common? Nothing, except that every time I hear these songs, like all those on these four sides, something in me awakens, vibrates, and simply makes me feel alive. Michka Assayas.
