Un Voyage avec le Oud Arabe Edition Deluxe

Description

From the exceptional richness of the collections of the Amar Foundation, the exhibition "The Sound Orient" showcases the history of threatened Arab musical traditions and their preservation. From record labels of the past to today's videos, it leads us to rediscover a forgotten heritage.
The exhibition first focuses on the first "preservation" of the Arab sound heritage from the early 20th century through the history of Western record labels that, starting in 1903, the date of the first recording of Arab music, had expanded their markets to the Arab world before being quickly followed by Levantine companies. A selection of 60 rare records (78 RPM) covering a wide variety of musical genres is thus revealed. From 1930 onwards, the form of Arab music begins to change radically, and these records, along with the music they carry, fall into oblivion. The digitization undertaken by the Amar Foundation since 2009 now allows us to rediscover these recordings.
The exhibition also presents, in the form of video installations, twelve threatened oral musical traditions for which unprecedented research, documentation, and recording work has been conducted on the ground between 2016 and 2019. From Iraq to North Africa through the Gulf, they testify to the diversity of sounds, songs, and rhythms of Arab music, whether secular or sacred, of popular or scholarly origins. These are now weakened due to wars and political upheavals, the persecution of ethnic or religious minorities, or globalization and changing customs.
The exhibition thus offers a reflection on the preservation of a centuries-old cultural heritage in peril and on the possibilities offered by new technologies for the safeguarding of this legacy. Can oral musical tradition be preserved from oblivion?
"The Sound Orient" presents itself as a listening and viewing lounge. Immersed in the midst of voices and instruments, music and moving images, the public is invited to immerse themselves in a sensual and profound musical elsewhere, in order to discover the vivid experience of the musical traditions of the Arab world.
