Composed of ten CDs each, these two box sets offer, in addition to twenty-five hours of music, a very representative selection of the rich sound collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), partly constituted by legal deposit: since the 1940s, all record companies present in France are required to deposit two copies of each of their productions at the BnF.
These two box sets focus on the decade of the 1950s, which is no longer protected, and gather an absolutely exceptional set of recordings, marketed at the time by major companies very active in the field of classical music, such as Ducretet Thomson, La Voix de son maître, Philips/Fontana, Deutsche Grammophon, Véga, Odéon, the International Guild of Record, or other often forgotten independent labels, like Vendôme, Lumen, or Pléiade.
The first box set brings together recordings of great musicians of the time (Victoria de los Ángeles, Alain Vanzo, Arthur Grumiaux, Samson François, Dinu Lipatti, Clara Haskil, Sir Thomas Beecham, Igor Markevitch, Charles Munch, Guido Cantelli, Herbert von Karajan, Ferenc Fricsay, etc.), who have often become absolute essentials in the discography for all music lovers.
The second box set focuses on much rarer recordings, often disappeared or forgotten, not reissued by the original publishers. A collection of such precious incunabula awaits you, featuring pianists Edith Farnadi, Friedrich Wührer, or Gonzalo Soriano, baritone Bernard Kruysen, and soprano Flore Wend, conductor Vladimir Golschmann, or harpsichordist Ruggero Gerlin!
An imposing booklet (over 100 pages), in color, consisting of a detailed program mentioning for each recording the original publisher as well as its possible representative of the time in France, also illustrated with photos of record covers, and reproductions of manuscripts preserved in their autograph form at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, accompanies these two magnificent box sets created in close collaboration with the BnF teams: three fascinating interviews with Laurence Engel (President of the BnF until February 2024), Mathias Auclair (General Curator and Director of the Music Department), and Lionel Michaux (Curator in charge of old phonograms) open wide the doors of this illustrious and fascinating institution.
