PLAY MISTY FOR ME… Music From the Films of Clint Eastwood The great Clint Eastwood first began his career as an actor, before gaining prestige as a director with films such as Unforgiven (1992), which won the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture, The Bridges of Madison County (1995), and Mystic River (2003), among many others. Also a pianist and composer, Eastwood’s love of jazz and blues shines through in the music he has chosen for the soundtracks of several of his films. He used Erroll Garner’s famous song “Misty” in the very first film he directed, aptly titled Play Misty for Me (1971). In 1988, he also directed a biographical film about Charlie Parker, Bird, with Forest Whitaker in the role of Parker, and produced a documentary on Thelonious Monk, Straight, No Chaser. He has collaborated with several jazz festivals, notably the Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea festivals (Play Misty for Me was filmed in Carmel-by-the-Sea and other locations on the Monterey Peninsula). In 2016, he was named Grand Marshal of the centennial celebration parade of Carmel-by-the-Sea and in 2024, he was honored with the inaugural Cultural Leadership Award at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
