Is there anything more majestic and epic than Lawrence of Arabia? A quintessential adventure and exploration film, this epic has influenced the greatest, starting with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Lawrence of Arabia also marks the first collaboration between David Lean and Maurice Jarre, for a soundtrack that earned him an Oscar (a second followed for Doctor Zhivago and a third for A Passage to India). The task is not easy, however: the young composer must write two hours of music in a record time of six weeks. No major problem, however: "When you work with great directors like David Lean, Luchino Visconti, or John Huston, you rarely have problems with inspiration," the composer states. The result is operatic, like the film, and inseparable from shots that have become totally cult.
