Latin Freestyle was a dizzying, passionate, ultra-modern music. It was the sonic equivalent of a refreshing can of Quatro or a Spanish dance-off from Harlem, and it became the electronically built bridge between disco and house.
Freestyle was born from the electro sound of the early 80s, combining clear staccato rhythms with Morse synth hooks, and complemented them with emotive vocals, usually female, often Latin. There were plenty of other things in addition: proto-house piano lines, Cuban percussion, emotion, and floor-dropping synths.
Assembled and annotated by Bob Stanley (who also compiled the famous "The Daisy Age" and "Fell From The Sun"), "Latin Freestyle" is the first compilation to cover the entire range of Freestyle, from its breakthrough in the early 80s to its revival in the early 90s.
So many classics… Lisa Lisa was part of the UK top ten with the 808 joy of "I Wonder If I Take You Home." "Two Of Hearts" by Stacey Q was released in 1986, while in 1987, "Fascinated" by Company B and "Point Of No Return" by Exposé became huge hits in UK clubs. • Today, Freestyle is a scene with a solid collector's market, and rarities like "Don't Be Shy" by Janelle sell for hundreds of dollars.
It's a classic summer soundtrack, ultimately condensed into a compilation from Ace Records - "Latin Freestyle."
