During the second half of the 1980s, a wave of alternative artists began to explore a softer and more ethereal sound, bringing a dreamlike aesthetic to the rock and pop idiom. Drawing inspiration from the United Kingdom (and the 4AD label in particular), this refined approach quickly spread, especially in the United States, slowly taking on the nickname "dream pop" - a catch-all term rather than a genre in itself. Organized by the same team as our successful 2016 Shoegaze set 'Still In A Dream', 'Cherry Stars Collide' explores this sound as it emerged in the mid-80s and defined a less grounded and more thoughtful approach to musical expression than had been proposed elsewhere. Fusing and blending with other genres along the way - from the shoegaze movement to guitar and proto-Britpop to the post "C-86" generation and the burgeoning left-field club scene - this sound both attracted artists already operating elsewhere and inspired new artists to embark on their own journey. Best listened to in the dark!
