ColdCell was founded in 2012 in Basel, Switzerland, and released their first album, Generation Abomination, the following year. ColdCell is rooted in the Swiss underground black metal scene and has always been eager to deliver dark and atmospheric concerts. And although drummer aW also plays simultaneously in the Swiss icons Schammasch, ColdCell has showcased its own unique approach that merges both old and new schools of black metal, creating a very personal expression that is both timeless and modern. Impressions of darkness, strangeness, and extremity are expressed in ColdCell's successive albums such as Lowlife (2015), Those (2017), and The Greater Evil (2021). With their latest album, Age of Unreason, ColdCell is now aligned with AOP Records and ventures deeper into social abysses, exploring the (de)reason for existence. Their sound remains as challenging and unsettling as ever here, with equal emphasis on abyssal weight and ethereal atmosphere, slippery violence, and unsettling march. While many extreme metal albums surge into a wave of unshakable familiarity, Age of Unreason reaches a crescendo roughly halfway through with "Meaningless," featuring the enchanting voice of Danish singer Ines Brodbeck (aka INEZONA), and continues to plunge into a cathartic frenzy with the final combo of "Sink Our Souls" and "Discord." Throughout these three particular tracks, the emotional core of ColdCell is dazzling, darkly exploring those corridors of the soul that few dare to tread.
