Yet, it was indeed a reconquest of the Renaissance. With Caccini, the new music immediately finds a miraculous melodist. He composes an Euridice, performed in 1602, two years after Jacopo Peri's and five years before Monteverdi's Orfeo. The Renaissance did not know opera, but it long nurtured it. It is this brand new form that opens and closes this recording with the voice of its first visionary, Claudio Monteverdi. In his Lamento d’Arianna, the central piece of a lost work, pain, regret, and revolt are expressed through the very music of the Italian language, brought here to incandescent heights. This new music spreads throughout Italy: Merula in Cremona, Falconieri in Naples, Barbara Strozzi in Venice, the most famous composer of the time. A great lover of this music, the Italian soprano Roberta Mameli interprets it with an extraordinary sense of words and drama. Luca Pianca offers her his artistry and vast experience.
