Hanns eisler edition - Box Set

Description

Hanns Eisler (1898-1962) is one of the major German composers of the 20th century. A committed artist close to the communists, he had to flee the Nazi regime for the United States in 1933, like his compatriot and friend Berthold Brecht, then the United States for East Germany in 1948, accused of being the “Karl Marx of music” and a Soviet spy. It was in East Berlin that he found success, notably through his collaboration with Brecht. A pupil of Schönberg in the early 1920s, his writing evolved from twelve-tone technique to a “functional” style meant to “elevate the people.” This box set presents the essentials of his work on 10 CDs: orchestral music, vocal music, chamber music, piano music... performed by the finest East German ensembles: Staatskapelle Berlin, RSO Berlin, RSO Leipzig, as well as the singers Gisela May and Irmgard Arnold.
