Anne Boleyn is undoubtedly the most famous of Henry VIII’s six wives. She was brought up for a time under the tutelage of Margaret of Austria, who was the patron of some of the most famous composers in all of Europe, then at the court of France before her return to England in 1522. It was in France that the young Anne developed her musical tastes, and a collection of her favorite works had begun to be assembled in what is now known as the “Anne Boleyn Songbook” (Royal College of Music, MS 1070). This book probably remained in her possession until her execution in 1536, when she was accused of adultery with no fewer than five men, including her own brother, George, and the lutenist Mark Smeaton. Here Alamire explores the finest works from the “Songbook” by the greatest composers of the early 16th century, such as Compère, Brumel, Mouton and Josquin. Alamire’s performances are interspersed with French songs and instrumental pieces for lute, harp and voice.
