Chris Spedding, one of the best British guitarists, has had a long career as a fully-fledged solo artist, member of numerous bands, and a highly respected session musician.
He first attracted public attention through his work on Jack Bruce's album "Songs for a Tailor" and as a member of The Battered Ornaments (with Bruce's writing partner, Pete Brown), then with the jazz-rock group Nucleus.
At the end of 1969, he recorded the album "Songs Without Words" for EMI Harvest's progressive rock label with a group including Roger "Butch" Potter (bass), John Marshall (drums), John Mitchell (keyboards), and Paul Rutherford (trombone).
Although planned for release in the UK, the album only appeared in Japan in April 1971, partly due to Spedding's dissatisfaction with the musical direction and the mood of the album. Despite this, "Songs Without Words" is now considered the best jazz rock record of the era by aficionados of the genre. This new edition from Esoteric Recordings has been recently remastered and includes a booklet with a new essay.
