You will find Pino Palladino (bass), Isaiah Sharkey (guitar), Cleo "Pookie" Sample (keyboards), Sir Darryl Farris (vocals), and Keyon Harrold (sax); but also illustrious veterans like James Poyser (the Roots), Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), and Shafiq Husayn (Sa-Ra), as well as newcomers like Anderson .Paak, Bilal, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Phonte Coleman. You already know The Drumhedz. It's just that you don't know it. They are the ones who have played on your favorite albums for years; who set the tone and drive the tempo at the best concerts you've attended; who make new stars sound like legends and legends sound like gods; who quietly accumulate Grammys without ever giving acceptance speeches; and who ultimately move on to the next concert with the satisfied humility of a job well done. They are session musicians and tour beasts, or "guys who have been overlooked but are killers!" - to quote the words of Drumhedz leader Chris Dave, who himself has played drums in the most varied contexts, from Adele to Bieber, from Dolly to D'Angelo. So of course, the group's first self-titled LP highlights and showcases this family of musicians - all of whom have in common that they earned their stripes by accumulating collaborations, their contributions flourishing like ivy around most of the great pillars that shape the sound of modern music; all having chosen to come together to create music that none of them could have made separately in another project. It is a space where the notion of genre no longer applies, where elements of funk, soul, gospel, hip-hop, and jazz blend until they become indistinct and form a solid mass of groove.
