On "Carry On," Chris Cornell (former leader of Audioslave and Soundgarden) shines brighter than ever by abandoning the watered-down sound of modern rock and winking at something a bit more accessible and much more interesting. "She'll Never Be Your Man" is a pleasantly puzzling love tale that proves to be revealing of Cornell's choice to lay things bare throughout his latest effort. Then, songs like "Finally Forever" and "Killing Birds" showcase the powerful vocal ability of the man against the laid-back guitar work that made Cornell's first band so popular. But "Carry On" is at its best when Cornell clearly sheds any aforementioned desire to continue as a hard-rock artist. "Arms Around Your Love," the best songwriting piece Cornell has ever been involved in, is a pop-rock single that must be everyone's guilty pleasure. This album was produced by Steve Lillywhite and includes a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."
