Chris Cohen's first album on Hardly Art, an accomplished singer-songwriter and long-time member of Deerhoof, is a little gem of subtly complicated pop. Chris has never had so much to say in such a direct way as on Paint a Room, his first album in five years, and its meanings are newly clear and resonant here, animated and highlighted for the first time by a live band. On Paint a Room, Chris's music feels like a warm spring breeze, easy to love and sweet to feel. But it is often laden with something heavy, as if it comes from an invisible storm. Sublime and sunny, these 10 songs envision dreamy new exits from old difficult situations. Paint a Room features contributions from Jeff Parker for the brass arrangements on "Damage," and from Josh Johnson (who produced Meshell Ndegeocello's Grammy Award-winning album The Omnichord Real Book) for the flute, saxophone, and clarinet arrangements throughout the album. Chris Cohen has also performed as a member of The Curtains, Natural Dreamers, and has accompanied Cass McCombs, Danielson, Kurt Vile, and many others. He produced Weyes Blood's album Front Row Seat to Earth, as well as works by Gun Outfit and Le Ren.
