Northern lights : Oeuvres pour choeur

Description

The choral music of the young Latvian composer Eriks Ešenvalds is increasingly appreciated everywhere. The works on this new album owe their existence to commissions from the United States, the United Kingdom, and northern Europe. They are sometimes ethereal expressions of unique Arctic phenomena (listen to the tuned wine glasses, which produce a simple but extraordinary effect within the choral texture), sometimes American ballads, and sometimes works in the “Anglican tradition,” the result of the composer’s recent residency at Trinity College, Cambridge. The Trinity College Choir Cambridge returns the compliment with this superlative interpretation of these varied and engaging works, all recorded under the watchful eye of the composer and conductor Stephen Layton.
