Description
Brief History of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac The Abbey of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac owes its existence to a chain of circumstances in which the believer recognizes the action of Providence. The initiative came from a daring monk animated by a faith that could move mountains. In 1901, a civil law deprived all religious in France of their property and drove them from their country. The small community that then lived within the walls of the Abbey of Saint-Wandrille-de-Fontenelle in Normandy, founded in the distant 7th century, had to go into exile in Belgium. The monks considered settling in Canada, but remained hesitant in the face of the project’s great difficulties. A few years later, Father Dom Paul Vannier entered the scene. Armed with the required authorizations, he left Belgium on June 10, 1912, in the company of a young postulant who had just joined the community. Guided by his intuition, he acquired a property wonderfully situated on the west shore of Lake Memphrémagog, about twenty kilometers south of Magog. The inauguration of the site dates from December 3, 1912. In 1935, after twenty-three years of difficult existence, the monastery was raised to the rank of conventual priory, that is, an autonomous house. The Canadian foundation took charge of its destiny. Vocations poured in and, as of January 29, 1938, a chapter meeting decided on the construction of the definitive monastery. On September 23, 1952, the elevation of the monastery to an abbey marked the final stage of its development. On the feast of the Canadian Martyrs, the Abbot President of the Benedictine Congregation of Solesmes, to which the new abbey belongs, summoned the solemnly professed monks for the election of the new superior and first abbot of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac. Their votes went to Father Dom Odule Sylvain. Following the resignation of Dom Odule Sylvain, Father Dom Jacques Garneau was elected, on June 13, 1983, second abbot of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac. As sons of Saint Benedict and animated by the spirit of Dom Prosper Guéranger, the Monks of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac cultivate the liturgy with the greatest care. Like the Monks of Solesmes, they pay special attention to the perfection of sung prayer in the incomparable form of Gregorian chant. Through their teaching, their recordings, and above all their example, they have been, in French Canada for more than fifty years, the most vibrant center of the Gregorian movement that began at Solesmes in the last century.Buy Chants Grégoriens les 100 plus belles pièces populaires - 7 CD at the best price
