Dies Irae De Profundis Te Deum

Description

Although Lully never held a position at the King's Chapel, his influence on the development of the grand motet, so emblematic of the Grand Siècle, was decisive. He composed ceremonial motets for the grand court ceremonies celebrating the glory of God and that of the king. Among the many royal funerals, those of Queen Marie-Thérèse in 1683 are among the most magnificent. Lully's Dies iræ and De profundis were performed there. But his most famous motet is undoubtedly his Te Deum, which was heard for the first time in 1677 and became the king's favorite. In 1687, Lully conducted it once again, but he violently struck his foot with the heavy cane he used to keep time. The injury became infected, leading to the superintendent's death on March 22. A tragic fate for one who was able to convey both the most brilliant glory and the anguish of death in a single grandeur… A theatrical grandeur that characterizes this version recorded at the Royal Chapel of the Château de Versailles. Lully is honored in 2019, on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the Académie Royale de Musique, of which he was the director from 1672 until his death.
