Goyescas

Description

With "Goyescas", pianist Charlotte Hu presents an album that brings together the eponymous cycle by Enrique Granados and two pieces from his "12 Danzas españolas". Granados' "Goyescas" is considered a major work of the Spanish piano repertoire. The composer drew inspiration from Francisco de Goya's paintings to create a six-movement suite where a great diversity of characters and emotions are juxtaposed. The musical range extends from dance-like gestures in "Los requiebros" to the lyrical elaboration of "La maja y el ruiseñor", culminating in the dramatic finale of "El amor y la muerte". In her interpretation, Charlotte Hu particularly highlights the interplay between virtuosity and narrative subtlety that characterizes Granados' musical language. She emphasizes both the work's modern harmonic development and its typically Spanish expressiveness. The program is completed by two dances from the "12 Danzas españolas": the introspective No. 2 "Oriental" and the rhythmic No. 5 "Andaluza". These two pieces brilliantly illustrate Granados' mastery of folkloric elements, melodic invention, and characteristic timbre.
