Charles Mingus (1922-1979), nicknamed "the angry man of jazz," is still an icon of the jazz world today. He was known for his intimidating and frightening temperament. His musical talent on the double bass, as a musician, bandleader, or composer, was immense. His music touches on all kinds of jazz styles, from free to blues, hard bop, big band, or third stream, influenced by the orchestrations of Duke Ellington, but always with an element of irritation and musical danger. Influenced by New Orleans jazz, Mingus also invented collective improvisation (as can be heard on various albums in this collection). This exciting box set is a journey through his fascinating music, showcasing all his artistic mutations and idiosyncrasies. Mingus is accompanied here by a host of excellent musicians such as Max Roach, Teo Macero, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Bud Powell.
