In this 2013 recording, Cecilia Bartoli brought the work closer to its roots in an interpretation with authentic style and colors, witnesses of the beginnings of Romanticism. For the first time, the entire opera was recorded on instruments dating from the time of Bellini. The original cuts were reinstated, the tonalities restored, and the music was performed according to the tempo indications of the composer. Moreover, the key roles were chosen in accordance with the vocal colors prescribed by the composer. Bellini wrote the opera for Giuditta Pasta, whose main role closely resembled that of a mezzo-soprano. Adalgisa was sung by Giulia Grisi, a light soprano, and Pollione by Domenico Donzelli who had a flexible tenor voice, in the style of Rossini. This recording, faithful in every way to Bellini's original intentions, is now reissued by Decca Classics on the occasion of the exceptional performance of Norma that Cecilia Bartoli will give on October 12, 2016, at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
