It has been nearly 10 years since Cathedrale’s very first demos were released. Since then, the Toulouse band has put out four albums praised by the press, toured all over Europe, and firmly established itself as a key figure on France’s independent scene. From the beginning, Cathedrale has retained its urgency, intact. For the recording of Poison, its fifth album, the band turned to Mathieu Versini, who recorded and mixed the record in his studio in Brussels. The tracks were recorded live, in just a few takes. No longer quite garage or power pop, not completely post-punk, the Toulouse band has, over the course of its records, carved out its own path and forged a sound instantly recognizable among a thousand. Poison stands as the culmination of that journey. Thirteen tracks under constant tension, where the guitars, shrill and omnipresent, answer the synths, a new addition on the previous album (Words / Silence, 2023), which here takes on its full meaning and helps instill a certain darkness, unprecedented in the band’s compositions. This fifth Cathedrale album offers a glimpse of a band in full command of its abilities, which, finally freed from the weight of its influences, delivers both its most visceral and its most accomplished album.
