Gabriela Montero makes her debut with Orchid Classics with a deeply personal self-titled album. The CD features the world premiere of her first formal composition, Ex Patria, as well as her first recording of a concerto, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. According to her, "Ex Patria is the portrait of a country barely recognizable from the one of my childhood. It is my emotional response to the decline of Venezuela into anarchy, corruption, and chaos." This album marks an important moment in Gabriela Montero's career evolution. Long acclaimed as a pianist and for her superb improvisations, she pays tribute with Ex Patria to the great tradition of composer-performers, of which Rachmaninoff himself is a part. Like him, Gabriela is an artist in exile, but her love for her homeland is never far from her creative mind.
