24 Pièces en style libre, op. 31
Description
The name of Louis Vierne (1870-1937) is immediately associated with organ music. Like several other organist-composers of the 19th century, he used the instrument to perform "symphonic" music. The new organs built at the time, notably by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, greatly expanded the possibilities offered by this instrument. The blend of styles in his organ music is unique. It features aspects of Romanticism combined with an Impressionist, almost pastel quality. Like many of his contemporaries, Vierne was fascinated by Wagnerian chromaticism. An admirer and student of César Franck, Vierne, nearly blind, was appointed organist at Notre-Dame de Paris at the age of thirty. Among his many works for organ, he composed six symphonies in five movements, which became classics of the repertoire. Franck inspired him in the use of cyclic elements and harmonic refinement, while the influence of Widor is evident in the use of the organ and classical forms. The 24 Pièces en style libre op. 31 (1913) by Louis Vierne constitute a major collection of the French organ repertoire. Written for organ or harmonium, these pieces testify to Vierne's talent for expressive lyricism and a refined harmonic palette. Unlike his large symphonic works, the Pièces en style libre are concise, intimate, and accessible, designed for both liturgy and concert. Each piece explores a distinct mood or character, from serene meditations like "Communion" and "Élévation" to more lively works such as "Cortège" and "Postlude." Vierne's rich harmonic language, rooted in late Romanticism but tinged with Impressionist nuances, reveals his deep sensitivity to sonic atmosphere.Buy 24 Pièces en style libre, op. 31 at the best price
