New version of Torn Arteries, the band’s seventh studio album. Fierce and uncompromising in their execution, Carcass’s ability to intricately dissect the entrails of death metal and show them to us so that we can understand them sonically has been their point of excellence for more than three decades. In December 2019, the band released their first single in over 5 years, “Under The Scalpel Blade,” followed by a 4-song EP titled “Despicable” (October 2020), setting a powerful precedent for the full-length album of 2021: Torn Arteries. With the album title itself referring to an old demo created by original drummer Ken Owen in the 80s, Torn Arteries stands as a bookend on the modern side of Carcass’s discography, connecting directly to where it all began more than 30 years ago. The recording and production of Torn Arteries were not as simple as sitting down for a few weeks and smashing everything out, but rather stretched over about a year, going back and forth between England and Sweden. Initially, drummer Daniel Wilding worked in Sweden at Studio Grondahl with David Castillo while the guitars were recorded at Stationhouse with James Atkinson in Leeds, England. Eventually needing some kind of residential setting to finalize the vocals, bass and other guitar work, the band returned to Studio Grondahl in Sweden to continue working in a very relaxed atmosphere with Castillo. “There wasn’t really a big plan to proceed this way, the process just developed organically,” explains Walker. Most will find that the only real struggle when indulging in Torn Arteries is fighting the urge to start it again the second it ends. It opens up substantial new ground for a band with such a reputation, while retaining that addictive and revered Carcass sound that has become the face of true death metal.
