Cited in all music histories as an important composer, named as one of the creators of the Italian madrigal, primarily known for the madrigal Il bianco e dolce cigno, and especially for the Ave Maria (a fake!) that all amateur choirs have sung since the Romantic era, Jacques Arcadelt has not yet taken the place he deserves in the contemporary music world. He served the Medici, the papacy, and the kings of France; can one imagine a more prestigious record? The recording sessions for this box set were the occasion for true emotional shocks; there, we had the certainty that Jacques Arcadelt was a true genius and that it was so easy to understand why he appeared to his contemporaries as an exceptional composer.
