Candlemass is a Swedish doom metal band formed in Upplands Väsby, a suburb of Stockholm, in 1984 by bassist, songwriter, and leader Leif Edling, and drummer Matz Ekstrom. The band had a decisive influence on doom metal, with the epic genre taking its name from their debut album, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. Alongside Pentagram, Saint Vitus, and Trouble, Candlemass is recognized as one of the "big four of doom metal." In November 2004, the band announced their second reformation. They recorded a new album, simply titled 'Candlemass,' released in May 2005. This album earned them a Swedish Grammy the same year.
