Don't be fooled by his prestigious acting career; Caleb Landry Jones is a true musical outsider. With his third album Gadzooks Vol. 2, he aligns himself with a lineage of atypical artists, many of whom are connected to reality by a tenuous thread and are capable of reaching the cosmic realms of imagination to bring back a musical masterpiece. The album was recorded with Nic Jodoin at the famous Valentine Recording Studios at the same time as the mixing of his first album The Mother Stone. The team invited a host of renowned musicians to contribute to the magic. The resulting album sounds a bit like pink elephants in cowboy hats doing ASMR... at least for the first 20 seconds before it completely changes. One of Caleb's greatest musical gifts is his ability to cover a vast energetic and sonic landscape, with a wide range of instrumentation and vocal styles on a completely unique song structure, in a way that feels coherent and euphoric. And while all his records have an ecstatic quality, Gadzooks Vol. 2 may be his most soothing and sublime collection to date. Each song contains at least a dozen melodic hooks, all so satisfying that one feels a deep nostalgia when they fade, until realizing they are being incorporated into another groove-filled track.
