When the Wind Forgets Your Name is the first album by Built To Spill since the release of Untethered Moon in 2015, and the very first for Sub Pop. Since their debut in 1992, Built to Spill's founder, Doug Martsch, has always wanted his band to be a collaborative project, a constantly evolving group made up of incredible musicians. After several albums and EPs on various independent labels, including the classic There's Nothing Wrong With Love released in 1994 on Up Shoot Records, he signed with Warner Brothers from 1995 to 2016. With his various collaborators, he recorded six undeniably brilliant albums during this period, as well as a live album and a solo album, Now You Know. While the band's impeccable discography serves as the entry point, Built to Spill live is an essential force in its own right: powerful, psychedelic, melodic, and visceral tracks resonate from amplifiers that sound as if they were powered by the famous Mack trucks. Today, Built to Spill is back with When the Wind Forgets Your Name, which continues to expand the Built to Spill universe in a new and impressive way. It’s a complex and cohesive blend of the different musical ideas of the collaborators. Alongside the poetic lyrics and themes of Built to Spill, experimentation and attention to detail produce an album full of unique, vibrant, and timeless sounds, from the dry guitar riff on "Gonna Lose" to "Spiderweb" and "Never Alright," odes to the classic sounds of REM and Dinosaur Jr. The album also features more bittersweet tracks like the lo-fi 60's style anthem "Fool’s Gold" with its mellotron notes and moaning bluesy guitars, and “Understood.” And if there is a Built to Spill sound, "Rocksteady," with its reggae and dub-inspired instrumentation, may be the track that strays the farthest from it! The album was produced by Doug Martsch, mixed by Doug, Lê Almeida, João Casaes, and Josh Lewis, and mastered by Mell Dettmer. The cover art was created by Alex Graham.
