(III-13) This quote is emblematic of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach; one can see to what degree his point of view opposes that of his contemporary Diderot, who develops his theory in the "paradox on the comedian" and according to whom the actor must make the audience feel emotions that he does not himself experience, thus basing his art on distanciation. This is unthinkable for CPE Bach, for whom sincerity is essential to convince and move. While baroque music has today almost become popular music again, flooding the classical record market and concert halls, it is curious to notice that it still struggles to emancipate itself from some preconceived ideas; between the concept of table music (which is supposed to be played as background for an inattentive prince) and that of music published by the dozen (for the attention of dilettantes), or even the thousands of opera seria that are assumed to be victims of the vain codes of the time and the superficial tastes of the public, it remains difficult today to be convinced that the works of the 18th century could truly seek a depth of expression. Truly, no composer can better challenge this erroneous view than Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
